The first few days after hair transplant surgery are critical. During this time, it’s essential that patients handle the treated areas with care. Soreness around the recipient sites is common and may take several days to fade. Hair transplant specialists generally recommend that you adjust your normal hair care routine to avoid potential complications with the new grafts.
A little TLC is required during the first week after hair transplant surgery. Refrain from washing your hair for at least 3-4 days after the procedure. Washing too soon can increase soreness and discomfort. While it’s OK to shower twice a day during recovery, do use a gentle shampoo after 7 days after surgery, one that is less likely to cause irritation. Baby shampoo is a good choice, and be sure to use a gentle lathering motion in the newly grafted areas. Rinse carefully then warm water then gently towel dry using a patting motion.
You should be able to resume using your regular shampoo two to three weeks after surgery. When outside, be sure to wear a hat in strong sunlight or use sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30+ to avoid skin damage.
It’s also prudent to hold off for at least a week to 10 days after the staples or sutures have been removed to get a haircut. So, in about four weeks you should be able to have a normal haircut. However, it’s best not to color your hair at least two weeks before transplant surgery and five to six weeks after to ensure optimum results. For at least a month following the procedure, avoid chemical dyes, hair gels, waxes, thickeners, conditioners, or straighteners. Also be very careful when blow-drying as too much heat can damage follicles.
