Hair loss can happen to anyone, male or female, young or old. There are nearly as many so-called hair-loss cures out there as there are people suffering from it. While hair loss is common, getting good results from a treatment isn’t. Some treatments are outright gimmicks, while others might work for a while, then stop or may not provide the type of results you want at all. One of the best options out there for restoring lost hair is a hair transplant. The procedure has many benefits when compared to other choices.
The Hair Is Yours
One of the biggest benefits of a hair transplant, for some patients, at least, is that the hair is your natural hair. It’s not artificial hair or a weave, nor is it hair from someone else’s body. During a hair restoration procedure, the surgeon uses your own hair to keep your body from rejecting it. Using your own hair also helps produce a natural looking result, since the color and texture of the hair will match that of the hairs on the rest of your scalp.
The Results Are Permanent
Another major benefit of hair restoration surgery is that the results are designed to last. The procedure is commonly performed on patients who are suffering from male or female pattern baldness. The hair lost due to male or female pattern baldness is usually sensitive to DHT, which causes the follicles on the scalp to miniaturize and the hair to fall out.
Only certain types of hair are DHT sensitive. These hairs are usually on top of the head. Hair located elsewhere on the body or even in other areas of the scalp, such as the back and sides, aren’t sensitive to the enzyme and won’t be affected by male or female pattern baldness. The hair follicles are able to resist DHT even when transplanted to another part of the scalp. That means that your results will last for as long as you do.
It’s important to note that while any transplanted hair will stick around after the surgery, there is a chance that you’ll continue to lose hair in other areas. Depending on when you have the surgery, you might lose enough hair after it that you want another procedure.
The Surgery Is Straightforward
While a hair transplant is best performed by an experienced surgeon, as it requires artistry and skill, the surgery itself is pretty straightforward and short. Depending on the type of procedure performed, you might have a long scar along the back or sides of your scalp, or you might not. During follicular unit extraction, the surgeon removes the hair follicles individually, so that you end up with a number of tiny pinpoint scars on your scalp. During follicular unit grafting, the surgeon removes a strip of skin containing the hair, then stitches the area closed, leaving a scar.
Generally, you’ll be under local anesthesia during hair restoration surgery. While you’ll be awake and alert during the procedure, you won’t feel anything. In many cases, you’ll be able to get yourself to and from the surgical center without assistance.
Improved Self Confidence
A huge benefit of having a hair transplant is getting your self confidence back and boosting your self esteem. It can take several months for your new hair to grow in, but once it does, it will be yours to style and play with as you see fit. You won’t have to worry about accidentally knocking your hair off of your head or that it does not match the other hair on your scalp. You’ll be able to dye your hair, cut it short or let it grow out long.
People might be able to tell that you’ve done something to bring your hair back, but that is generally okay. You’ll most likely be too happy to have a full head of hair again to worry about who knows about the surgery or doesn’t.
If you are tired of using topical products that don’t work as well as you’d like or are tired of wearing a toupee or weave and having it slide off or fall out, a hair transplant might be right for you.
